For the year that was and the year ahead

New Year's Eve 2008
a
a
Lord, thank you for all the blessings that you have given my family in the past year and please continue to bless us in the coming year so that we will have more to share.
a
a
Happy new year and may God bless us all!

Beautiful Day

Bright and cheery: that's my Aly.  I've been told more than once that my daughter is beautiful and that she has a great smile.  She really is a happy kid :)
a
a
This morning, when we stepped out of the elevator into the parking lot, we felt the cool "Bangkok winter" breeze.  Aly told me, "It's a beautiful day, mommy."  Intrigued, I asked her, "What made you say that, babe?"  She said, "Because it's windy."  The way she said it -- so innocent and sweet, made me believe that even the simplest things like the cool morning breeze can make your day beautiful.  It's like my 7-year old was teaching me to be thankful even for the smallest of things.
a

It's a beautiful day
don't let it get away

One More Year

April 1, 2008: Richard's first day at work.
a
a
Richard's assignment in Bangkok has been extended for another year.  Yay!
a
a
When we arrived here in March 2008, we were expecting to stay for only two years.  Then, we were given an extension until March 2011.  Just this week, we were able to confirm that we'll be staying until June 2012!!  So from two years, to three years; three years to four years; four years to ?  We don't know that yet, but we're hoping for the best :)
a
a
Thank you, Lord for Richard's work and thank you for all the blessings.

Things That Make Me Happy: Father and Daughter Bonding

Richard helping Aly with her plastercast crafts kit.
a
a
I love it when these two do things together.  I'm usually pakialamera, but times like this, I'd rather step back and watch.
a
a
While Richard was mixing the plaster, I heard Aly say: "Thank you, daddy for helping me."  I didn't see it, but I imagined that she hugged him at the waist after that.  She's sweet and appreciative like that.

Pancake Sundays

Since our weekday breakfasts are usually hurried, we make it a point to make our weekend breakfast more special.  Our favorite: pancakes!
a
a
I used those heart-shaped thingies that I bought from Daiso to surprise Aly.
a
a
Pancakes made with love.
a
a
What I also love about it is it's the only time during the week that we get to eat breakfast together.  And that's what makes it more special :)

Generosity

Aly came up to me the other day, clutching the plastic container that has her stash of cookies.  She asked if she can give some to her friends Annie and Manolia.  Of course you may, sweetie!  I was pleasantly surprised!  You see, Richard and I always teach Aly to share: books, crayons, pencils...most especially food.  We constantly remind her that she is blessed because we can afford these things so it will be great to share them with her friends.  The last thing we want is for our daughter to grow up to be the kind of person who counts the number of chocolate bars that she has in the ref or the one who gets upset when somebody else eats her food without her permission.  That is just nasty!  We always tell her that we can always buy new ones and it's more fun to share your favorite goodies with your friends than to leave them in the pantry and forget about them until they rot.  Anyway, we know now that the lessons on generosity have finally paid off because she went to school with these:
a
a
Cookies to share with her BFF's.  She even labeled them!  So cute!

Breakfast Dessert

When Richard and I woke up last Sunday, Aly had already set the table for breakfast.  She even prepared dessert for us.
a
a
A bunch of m&m's, Kisses and mini Oreos from her stash of goodies in the kitchen.  Isn't she the sweetest?

Our big girl is growing up too fast!

Mom + Dad

Mom and dad are back from their month-long trip to the US.

a
At the Grand Canyon. (Photos grabbed from tita Choy's FB.  Thanks, tita!)
a
a
While they were there, I always prayed for their safety, most especially during their flight back home.  Thank you, Lord for hearing my prayer :)  And thank you too for giving mom and dad the opportunity to travel.  I'm sure they had a blast!  They went to so many places, met with mom's relatives and high school friends...and the shopping!  Gosh!  I'm so inggit!  My siblings were very excited about the gadgets and goodies that mom and dad brought home.  I can't wait to go home and wrap my arms around this:
a
a
Michael Kors, baby!  Wheee!!!  Photo taken by Angel using her new iTouch :)
a
a
Thanks mom and dad!  I love you!  Thanks in advance too for the stuff that you bought for Richard and Aly.  Excited na kami lahat dito to see them :)

Bangle From Aly

I wore this the other day:
a
a
A purple bangle that Aly bought from my sister-in-law's shop using her own money.
a
a
This was Aly's pasalubong for me when she had a sleepover at my in-laws'.  She got purple because she knows it's my favorite color.  I love how she always remembers to buy trinkets for me or her dad.  She used to do this during their weekly field trips last summer.  I kept all of them.  I'm lucky to have such a sweet and thoughtful daughter :)

Things That Make Me Happy: Weekday Lunch with the Hubby

Because they don't come very often, that's why I cherish them.

Even if it's just takeout lunch, I still get kilig :)

God Heard Me

This is just too amazing not to share...
a
a
When I was at Lalaisap (lunch market at Silom) today, the sky was dark.  I was there at 11am, but with the overcast sky, it felt like 4pm.  I knew it would rain anytime.  But I didn't bring an umbrella, so I prayed to God that He won't let it rain while I was there.  So I walked around, ate lunch and walked around some more.  There was a slight drizzle at around 1pm, but I prayed again: "Please, God, just a little bit more.  Please don't let it rain while I'm still here."  Still, I prepared myself in case it did rain.  You will never know, right?
a
a
I managed to make a quick stop at Dean and Deluca before going home and it started drizzling a bit when I left.  Still, I made it to the cab dry and as we were on the last turn going to our street, this happened:
a
a
It started to rain.
a
a
a
Taken from inside the cab.
a
a
Amazing, isn't it?  I am one lucky gal.  Thank you, Lord for hearing my prayer and for keeping me dry :)

What Makes Me Smile

...watching father and daughter do things together.
a
a
Here, Richard is helping Aly with her reading log homework.  They always read a book together at night and I admire Richard for doing this.  No matter how tired he is from work, he always makes time for bedtime story.  It's their nightly ritual.

Breakfast Love

Made by the hubby with love.
a
a
Richard makes my morning coffee (yes, I'm a princess!) but today I got an extra treat :)  I woke up this morning to the wonderful smell of croissant baking in the oven...heaven!  What a great way to start the week!

I always share this with Aly and she loves it!

Love Thy Neighbor

I helped out a neighbor in need today.
a
a
I was on my way back to the apartment from Aly's school when I heard someone behind me give out a loud, frustrated sigh.  I turned around and saw that it was my neighbor, Maria.  I asked if she's ok, and she said she needed resealable bags for her daughter's homework.  They didn't have any at 7-11 and she needed them right away.  I always keep a box of those at home so I invited her over to my house and I gave her some.  It felt really good to make someone smile.  It was a small gesture but it definitely set my day right :)

Pat on the Back

Our first out of town trip when we were still dating.  Galera, May 2007
a
a
Being a housewife is not an easy job.  Ask any of my stay-at-home mommy friends and they will tell you that it's an 18-hour, 7-day-a-week job with no holidays, no sick leaves and no day-offs.  Daig pa talaga ang magtrabaho sa opisina.  That's why I say that I'm not just a housewife; I'm a domestic goddess :D
a
a
I am lucky to be married to a man who values my work, but I was never really given any affirmation as to how much he appreciates my work until last night.  Richard and I were having our usual pillow talk and our topic was a certain friend of ours who is currently unemployed.  Being the workaholic that he is, Richard was wondering how this friend of ours can just sit around and do nothing all day.  I told him that this person's life is no different from mine: I just stay in the house all day and wait for him and Aly to come home.  But the hubby refused to think that I'm just lazing around and being idle.  He said that my job is not easy.  In fact, I'm always busy: I do the laundry, I clean the house, iron our clothes, blog, cook and buy groceries...
a
a
That was definitely a pat on the back.  Thank you, sweetie for appreciating my work.  It means a lot to me :)

A Friendly Reminder

I don't mean to be preachy, but some people just don't realize how blessed they are.

No More Fever!

Isn't she the cutest girl with flu that you've ever seen?
a
a
It's day 3 and Aly is fever free.  Thank God it's gone.  Thank God it's not dengue.  With Richard away on a business trip, I'm glad that Aly's ok.  At least he doesn't have to worry about her with him so far away.
a
a
God is good.  All the time.

32 and Counting

Blowing the candles on my birthday cakes.
a
a
I am 32 years old (there's no shame in revealing one's true age!) and life has been great to me: I have the best husband and the sweetest daughter one can ever ask for, a great family, wonderful in-laws and fabulous friends...I am truly blessed!  Thank you, Lord for all the blessings.  To say that I can't ask for anything more will be a cliche because you know my heart's deepest desire.  I also know Lord, that this wish will be granted in Your own time.  Meanwhile, please help me keep the faith.  For everything else, thank you, Lord.  Thank you for showering my family with all the blessings :)

Aly's Prayer

The hubby had a business dinner last night so it was my turn to tuck our princess in.  It was also my first time to hear her new prayer.  Heehee!  Aside from her usual intentions, which includes taking care of our lolo Pete and asking Jesus not to forget her baby sister, she said: "Jesus, please take away my bad dreams.  If I don't have any bad dreams, please don't give me a bad dream.  I love you, Jesus!"

So precious!

Today Is A Good Day

Things that made me smile today:
a
  • I saw my favorite maid outside our apartment this morning!  She was happy to see me (she gave me a bright and cheery "sawasdee ka"!); I was happy to see her too.  She used to clean our old apartment in Tower 1.  On our last day, I asked her if she will move to Tower 5 but she wasn't sure back then.  But today I saw her and she really made my day :)
a
  • I also did a little window shopping this morning.  Oh, how I missed the malls in Siam!  I didn't buy anything.  I was just happy looking at the beautiful stuff on display.
a
  • The school secretary, Khun Kate just called and she told me that the photo bags that I ordered has arrived.  Yay!  I will post pics later.
a
I love how these little surprises made my day.  Thank you, Lord for a wonderful morning.  I hope that the rest of the day will be as great :)

Things That Make Me Happy: A Pot of Green Tea

With no tea cups at home, I'm using the Starbucks Espresso mug that I got from our AC Christmas Party last year.  I love it!
a
a
I love it even more when I share this pot with the hubby.  We've made it a habit of sorts to drink green tea after dinner, lalo na when we ate fried food.  That's how we chillax :)

Things That Make Me Happy: Empty Hampers

Because that only means one thing: tomorrow is laundry holiday :)  And if it's a laundry holiday, it also means I can catch the 10am shuttle so I can go to the lunch market at Silom.  Whoopee!
a
a
Yay for laundry holidays!

A Goddess Moment: Visiting My Husband's Office for the First Time

Yesterday, I went to Richard's office for the very first time.  We've been living in Bangkok for more than two years already, but I've never been to his office ever.  Yesterday was my first time and I was there for our visa renewal.
a
a
To mark the special occasion, I wanted to surprise my husband by wearing the new dress that I bought during our recent trip to Manila.  I also put on a little make up because I knew he will be introducing me to his colleagues so it wouldn't hurt to look a little nice.
a
a
It was a great morning :)  I loved spending time with the hubby even for a little while.  Can you believe I was kilig even if we just ate lunch in their canteen?  Well, it was not exactly your ordinary canteen because it was bigger and a lot cleaner than the usual mall foodcourt.
a
a
Their office complex is huge!  It's like the CIA/FBI offices that we see in the movies where there are a lot of doors with entry codes, long corridors and restricted areas.  Heehee!  It's nice to finally see where the hubby works.  His office is a long drive from our place so I learned to appreciate his hardwork all the more.  Sweetie, you are the best!
a
a
Oh, and the best part of the entire experience?  When I wore my new dress, I saw for myself that all the hardwork that I've been putting into my diet has finally paid off!  Woohoo!!  I know I still have a long way to go if I want my 2009 body back, but I know I'm getting there.  The dress is one size smaller than my usual dress size but I was able wear it.  It was a comfortable fit so hooray!!  Also when Richard came home last night, he told me that one of colleagues said that his wife is very pretty :)  *blush*  She thought I was very fair and asked if I was Chinese.  Heehee!
a
a
Totally a goddess moment!  And I am soo determined to lose weight more than ever :)

Why I have the Best Family in the World

One of my favorite family photos, which was taken during our sports-themed Christmas Party in 2008.
a
a
Exactly one day after Aly and I arrived in Bangkok, Richard had to leave for another business trip to Manila.  It sucks because we missed Richard so much during our vacay, but these business trips have become a part of the hubby's worklife already so Aly and I are kinda getting the hang of it.
a
a
Anyway, while he was there, my family took him out to dinner.  The entire brood was there: dad, mom, my brothers Mick and Jof, my sister Angel and her boyfriend Marc and my favorite tita in the entire universe, tita Papot.  You cannot imagine how super duper inggit Aly and I were because we weren't there.  When I told Aly that her dad was going to have dinner with everyone back home, she said it wasn't fair because she misses her lolo and lola very  much.  But the jealousy wore off eventually and it turned to happiness and kilig because I realized just how much my family loves Richard.  I'm not surprised that they took Richard out to dinner because they always do that when he comes home.  But for this particular trip, I already told mom that he will be running on a tight schedule so he might not be able to meet them for dinner.  And yet, my dad persisted.  Thankfully, Richard's schedule cleared up and that's how they ended up having dinner together.
a
a
When Richard came home, I told him that my family really loves him because they really wanted to see him.  They didn't let him leave Manila without seeing him.  It's a one-hour  drive (at the very least, with no traffic jam in SLEX) from Tagaytay to Alabang and I've seen how bad SLEX traffic can be. I also know how my parents hate being stuck traffic so I know that it's really quite something.  And that's why I think I have the best family in the world.
a
a
I am truly blessed to have a wonderful family.  I have the greatest parents ever -- the best grandparents that any kid would ask for.  I am also proud of my siblings and what they have come to be -- mom didn't raise any brats so we all grew up with so much love and respect for each other, and we always support each other no matter what.  No sibling rivalry and jealousy in our family!  I also love how they love Richard and Aly because they know how these two make me happy.  I have the best family in the world!  I really do :)
a
a
To dad, mom, my siblings, tita Papot and Marc: thanks for keeping Richard company while he was there.  It may have been just a short dinner, but it meant a lot to us.  We love you!

Four-day Getaway

Aly and I just got back from our four-day getaway last night.  It was indeed a getaway in every sense of the word because as you may all know, last week was just ker-razy here in Bangkok.
a
a
I have so many things to be gratefulful for:  Thank you, Lord for keeping me and my family safe.  I never realized how close we were to danger until my Thai friend called to tell me that the bank right at the farther end of our street was hit by a bomb.  Richard knew that I wasn't too keen on leaving him behind, but when I saw the shattered glass on the pavement the next morning, I knew that my husband made the right call.
a
a
I am also happy that we made it in time for my dad's birthday.  He didn't know that Aly and I were coming home so it was a great surprise.  When I greeted him in the morning, his reply was "hope you, Richard and Aly were here".  Little did he know, Aly and I were already at the airport en route to Manila.  Talk about having his birthday wish granted pronto.  Heehee!
a
a
Our four-day trip was super bitin but I was very happy to be able to spend time with my family, my in-laws and my friends.  I wish we stayed longer, though but no worries because Aly and I will be back soon.
a
a
Last of all, I am thankful to be back in my husband's arms.  How I missed him while we were away.  Sure we'd chat, call and send text messages to each other but nothing beats actually being together.  Truth be told, I was kinda sad that we had to leave Manila so soon, but my excitement to be with Richard outweighed my sadness. I am glad to be back home.
a
a
Speaking of being back, I've got a ton of things to do today: laundry, household chores and it's Aly's sports day today so I need to be there to cheer for her.  Sigh...I am soo back!

Spaghetti

Aly cooking spaghetti.  Taken in November 2009.
a
a
Notice how she needs to stand on a step ladder?  She's much taller now.
a
a
The best spaghetti ever!
a
a
Aly loves spaghetti.  No doubt about that.  And because of that, we have spaghetti or baked macaroni once a week.
a
a
This morning, while Aly was having breakfast, I told her that I'm going to cook spaghetti for lunch.  Upon hearing the word "spaghetti", Aly dropped her buttered toast and ran to me by the kitchen door and gave me a big hug.  Awww...
a
a
Those are the moments that I live for.  I love being a mom :)

Lazy Sunday

Aly on her new spot in the living room enjoying popcorn on a lazy Sunday.
a
a
I'm sure you've heard about it on the news: Central Bangkok has now become a warzone.  But my family's ok.  I am thankful that our apartment is away from harm.  Things may not be the same here in Bangkok, but what's important is all three of us are safe and away from danger.
a
a
By the way, thank you to all our friends who sent messages asking if we're ok.  Pat, please tell Aris to stop making you kulit because we're A-OK!  Heehee!  Mom, you can stop worrying now.  We'll be on the first flight home in case things make a turn for the worst.  Thanks for the concern.  We really appreciate it.
a
a
During the weekend, we just stayed at home because there's nowhere to go anyway.  Instead of our usual Sunday lunch outside, we just ate at the restaurant on the 4th floor.  Oh how I love lazy Sundays!  No chores to do, no worries...Too bad we couldn't  make it to Church yesterday because all the roads leading to Ruamrudee have been blocked by the army.  I really hope that peace will reign soon so things can return back to normal -- kids can go back to school, malls will open, people can have their jobs back, we can go to church...
a
a
In spite of the numerous close encounters we've had with the red shirts in the past weeks, I am thankful that we are safe and away from harm.  I am also grateful for having awesome friends and family who made us know that they are thinking about us.  For that, we will continue to keep safe because we do not want you to worry more than you have to.  *Big hug*

A Goddess Moment: Mother's Day Breakfast

I woke up yesterday morning to find Richard busy preparing breakfast in the kitchen.  It was the best breakfast ever!  I hate to admit this, but his pancakes are way better than mine.  We use the same pancake mix, but it was the best I've ever had!  I wonder how he did it.
a
a
Oh, how I love being exempted from doing any household chores.   I savored every single minute of it! No other day really makes me feel like a goddess than Mother's day -- except for my birthday, ofcourse.  Heehee!

Untitled

Three days ago, we found a tiny lump in Richard's lower body.  While the hubby assured me that it's probably nothing serious, I was worried like crazy.  My paranoid mind went into overdrive: I suddenly remembered my lola Aning and her cancer; how it all started from a small lump, etc.  To say that I was distraught is an understatement -- I was terrified.  Ofcourse, I kept this all to myself because I didn't want Richard to worry about me.  I should be worried about him, not the other way around.
a
a
I made Richard promise that we should go and see a doctor asap and he agreed.  So yesterday, we went.  I was a bundle of nerves, I tell you.  I kept praying and praying...I prepared myself for the worst.  It might seem overacting to some, but we're talking about the love of my life here.  I have every right to be so.
a
a
So we went to see a surgeon who said that the tiny lump is nothing but a harmless cyst.  The moment he mentioned the word "harmless", I was soo relieved!  You can not imagine how happy I was at that moment.  I guess that's how one would feel if they won the Lotto.
a
a
The surgeon went on the explain, but my mind kinda stopped listening the moment I heard him say it's harmless because that's all I really needed to know.  I do remember him saying that we can have it removed if we want to, but it's not that urgent.
a
a
From this experience, I have a lot to be thankful for.  First, my husband's health.  I'm also thankful that my husband kept his promise to see a doctor asap.  I asked him if he was scared, he said no so probably the only reason why he went was to keep me from worrying.  For that, I believe I am truly blessed with a wonderful husband.  Thank you, Jesus for making everything ok.  I pray that You will continue to bless him with good health in the years to come.

My Little Assistant

Aly takes pride in being "mommy's little assistant".  And she takes that role seriously.  One time, I asked her to get me a pair of scissors.  Richard tried to beat her to it, but she almost got upset.  She said, "Daddy!  I'll get it!  I'm mommy's little assistant!".  Richard had no choice but to retreat.  Heehee!
a
a
She told me the other day that one of the light bulbs in her room needed to be changed so I told her to write me a note so I won't forget.  The next morning, I saw this on our message board at the kitchen:
a
a
Heehee!
a
a
The light bulb has been changed, but I haven't erased her message yet because Richard and I like to look at it and it never fails to make us smile.  For the nth time, our little girl is growing up too fast!
a
a
I told Richard that I hope her attitude won't change when she grows up.  I hope she will carry on that certain kind of pride and happiness whenever mommy and daddy ask her to do things for us.  I mean, you know how teenagers can be (been there, done that!).  Anyhow, it's too early for me to worry about that.  I will just have to enjoy having the best little assistant as long as I can :)

The Best Medicine

...is not laughter, but a chat with mom.
a
a
After three days of being sick and stuck at home, I finally woke up today feeling better.  I didn't go to any doctor; I didn't need to.  All I needed was to chat with my mommy.
a
a
So now I'm thinking: was I really sick or just homesick?

Why I Have the Best Husband and Daughter in the World

I've been sick these past few days.  Nothing serious though, just cough and cold...and aching joints and muscles with a terrible headache...sorta kinda like the flu minus the fever.  Whatever I'm down with, fever or no fever, I still feel like hell.  And I have to tell ya, doing household chores when you're not feeling 100% sucks big time!
a
a
But I'm hanging in there.  The hubby helps me in any way he can.  He helps me with the dishes at night and he brings Aly to school in the morning.  Having that  luxury of staying in bed for an extra hour is great for me, but it makes Richard late for work which is baaad.  You see, he usually has meetings the moment he steps foot in the office so it's really a big sacrifice for the hubby and I really, really, truly appreciate it.  Thanks, sweetie!  I love you!
a
a
Not to be outdone is my seven-year old who made this for me yesterday:
a
a
A get well soon card :)  Ain't that sweet?
a
a
I wish I can recover soon.  I need to and I want to.  The first thing I'm going to do is go to the grocery so I can grant Richard and Aly's kitchen wishes: brownies for Richard, cheese quesadillas and lemon cupcakes for Aly.  I will make them with so much love they wouldn't know what hit them.  Heehee! I have the best husband and daughter in the world!  I really do :)

Teaching Awareness

Aly and I wearing matching dresses and masks for a masquerade-themed Christmas party last year.
a
a
Aly likes everything terno with mommy, but motherhood is should be more than wearing matching bags, shoes and dresses.  It's more than helping her with homework, teaching her how to draw, how to take care of her things, teaching table manners...motherhood is so much more that that.  I also want to teach Aly about awareness.
a
a
The other night, we were watching Idol Gives Back on tv and it opened her to concepts like malaria, world hunger and other stuff.  I try to explain things to her in a manner that she would best understand.  Like when the subject of malaria came up, I told her that the mommy who was carrying a baby in her tummy died because she was bit by a sick mosquito.  Lesson: always wear Off lotion especially when we're in far away places so those sick mosquitoes won't bite you.
a
a
I didn't want to give her big concepts just yet.  Only small deeds that she can grasp because she is, after all, only seven years old.  Awareness first; charity will come later.  How I wish my daughter was studying in Assumption instead. That would have made my job easier.   Plus, if we have the same alma mater, then that would be another cool thing that we have in common. Heehee!

Anyway, I digress.  After explaining malaria and other things to her, I didn't really expect Aly to understand right away.  So after the show, she brushed her teeth, changed into her pajamas and went back to the living room to sit beside me while I watch tv.  Then she told me: "Mommy, I wish those sick mosquitoes will just go away so they won't bite the mommies so the babies can be born and they will grow up and play."

I want my daughter to grow up to be a good person -- I mean, who doesn't?  And I sometimes ask if I'm doing the right thing in raising her the way that I do.  I guess that statement from Aly is just the kind of affirmation that I need to know if we're going in the right direction.

Aly's Corner

Note from the mommy: Unlike in our other blog where I do all the talking, I've decided to make my seven-year old more involved in this one because I'm teaching her about gratitude.  I want her to learn to appreciate and to be thankful even for the smallest things.  In our home, we also make it a point to celebrate our achievements, no matter how small they may seem.  Aly's Corner will reflect those blessings and everything else worth mentioning from my little girl's point of view.

Thank you, Jesus for helping me memorize the Bible verses.  I got 100% in Bible class yesterday.
